Much of the Maldives has shallow, coral-derived soils that hold little water. Limited land and freshwater also shape local agriculture. Those conditions make the growing medium, the available space and the water source useful starting points for understanding an island growing project.

Farming in the Maldives follows conditions that can change with the monsoon. In Laamu, FAO documented farmers exploring drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting and protected raised beds. Its 2018 field story offers a local example of practical responses to weather and water challenges.
Growing food also has a place within our towns. In June 2025, a second phase of urban farming plots and a new Urban Plaza opened in Hulhumalé. The project brings growers, consumers and communities closer together around local food production in an urban setting.
